On Saturday 26th March COSMIC supporter Natalie & her team battled against the aches, pains and torrential rain to complete the incredible 50 mile walk. They set off from the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading at 5am in their beautifully printed ’50 Miles for More Smiles’ hi-vis jackets and were joined by family and friends at various points throughout the walk.
At about 6am the walkers were greeted by Wokingham rock choir, which was a lovely surprise and some of the choir joined the walk for a while. The team were cheered on by people at the roadside and the different milestones were superbly displayed by friends and family with colourful posters and balloons.
Natalie’s walk & story received some amazing media coverage with an article in the Evening Standard on the Thursday, an interview with BBC radio Berkshire on the Friday and some filming took place on route by BBC South Today which was broadcast on Easter Monday (link posted below).
At around 11.15pm after an astonishing 18 hours on their feet Natalie & the wonderful team of walkers were greeted at the finish (St Mary’s Hospital) by the COSMIC team, PICU consultant Simon Nadel, Senior sister Carly and family & friends.
We are all incredibly proud of Natalie, everyone who took part in the walk and all who helped to support this enormous challenge. To take on such an amazing challenge in honour of her daughter Grace’s memory has truly inspired us all.
Natalie & the team have raised a phenomenal £26, 063.96 so far for the More Smiles Appeal, which will go a huge way in enabling us to provide many more critically ill children with the specialist care that they need. Visit Natalie's fundraising page to find out more about her story.
On behalf of all at COSMIC & St Mary’s PICU we would like to say a massive thank you and well done for completing this remarkable challenge.
